Fundamentals of Geographic Information Science (GIS)
Course Description
"Maps tell stories, allow people to see what is, and understand what can be" (ESRI UC, 2022). In our rapidly changing world, spatial data is everywhere - and geography provides the fundamental language to connect economic, social, and environmental factors, revealing hidden patterns and relationships that help us understand our complex, interconnected planet. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) combine cutting-edge technology, data science, and creative problem-solving to tackle today's most pressing challenges, from climate change to conservation. This introductory course teaches students to "think spatially" while developing hands-on skills in geospatial analysis and data visualization. Through weekly lectures, guest speakers, hands-on computer lab assignments, a midterm exam, and a comprehensive final project, students will learn to work with spatial data, conduct analyses, create beautiful maps, and design solutions to real-world problems. This hands-on approach develops practical expertise in spatial analysis, remote sensing, and cartographic design while fostering geographic thinking essential for addressing complex challenges across local to regional scales. This course must be taken for a minimum of 3 units and a letter grade to be eligible for Ways credit.
