Data Studio: Consulting Workshop on Biomedical Data Science

Biomedical Data Science MED - School of Medicine

Course Description

Data Studio is a collaboration between the CTSA/SPECTRUM (Clinical Translational Science Award/Stanford Center for Clinical and Translational Research and Education) and the Department of Biomedical Data Science (DBDS). Data Studio is open to the Stanford community. DBDS faculty are available to provide assistance with biomedical research questions. The educational goal is to provide data science consultation training for students and postdoctoral fellows interested in biomedical data science. Most sessions are Workshops that provide an extensive and in-depth consultation for a Medical School researcher based on research questions, data, statistical models, and other material prepared by the researcher with the aid of our facilitator. Experts in the area across campus are invited to attend and contribute to the brainstorming. During the Workshop, the researcher solicits advice from the panel of DBDS faculty consultants about the project, goals, and needs. The remaining sessions are Office Hours that provide brief and focused consultations based on a single research question. After both types of sessions, the facilitator helps with immediate action items and provides a summary of the discussion. The faculty demonstrate skills required of practicing biomedical consultants: exposure to biomedical and health science applications, identification of questions related to data science, selection or development of appropriate statistical and analytic approaches to answer research needs. Students are required to attend the sessions, participate in the discussion, and prepare a formal written report about one of the Workshops. May be repeated for credit. Prerequisites: course work in applied statistics, data analysis, or consent of instructor.
