The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program in East Asian Languages and Cultures is designed for students with strong academic records and an interest in pursuing postgraduate research in East Asian archaeology, literature and culture, or linguistics.

Admission to candidacy is a prospective judgement by the faculty of a student’s potential to successfully complete the requirements of the degree program. Students are expected to complete qualifying procedures and apply for candidacy by the end of their second year in the program. Qualifying procedures in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures (EALC) include completion of the required coursework associated with the program requirements in the relevant subplan area and submission of an M.A. qualifying paper or thesis by week 5 of spring quarter of the second year. EALC faculty vote on each second year student's admission to candidacy during a meeting held in the first week of June. Additional details on qualifying procedures can be found in the EALC Graduate Handbook.

Completion requirement

In the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures, the oral exam is a defense of the dissertation presented upon completion of a pre-final draft submitted to reading committee members at least three weeks prior to the defense date. Students consult with their dissertation advisor and reading committee members on the timing of the defense at the beginning of the intended submission quarter of the dissertation. The date of dissertation defense should be set at least a month in advance, and must take place at least two weeks prior to the filing deadline to allow for ample time for any revisions that the reading committee deem necessary for the filing. Students are expected to complete this milestone by the end of the fifth year of study.

Students are required to submit an approved dissertation in English (approval for writing the dissertation in another language is normally granted only in cases where the other language or literature in that language is also the subject of the discipline, and such dissertations written in another language must include an extended summary in English) that makes an original contribution to the field of East Asian languages and cultures in final form as approved by the reading committee at least two weeks prior to the final manuscript submission deadline to the final reader (and additional committee members as necessary). Students are expected to submit the dissertation in the same quarter that they complete the oral exam, and no later than the subsequent quarter.

Demonstrate proficiency in at least two research languages chosen and at a level approved by the primary advisor according to the student's specific research goals. Students must be proficient at the fourth-year level at the minimum in the primary research language and at the second-year level at the minimum in the secondary research language; higher levels of proficiency may be required depending on the advisor’s recommendation. Proficiency must be certified through examination and/or coursework through the Stanford Language Center and to be determined on a case-by-case basis. When deemed necessary by the student’s advisor(s), working knowledge of a third language may also be required.

Students concentrating on classical Japanese literature usually are expected to fulfill the supporting language requirement by completing kanbun, JAPAN 265 - Readings in Premodern Japanese (2-5 units). 

For the supporting language, students must be proficient at the second-year level, at the minimum; a higher level of proficiency may be required depending on the advisor’s recommendation. Reading proficiency must be certified through a written examination or an appropriate amount of coursework to be determined on a case-by-case basis.

When deemed necessary by the student’s advisor(s), working knowledge of an additional supporting language may also be required.

Complete eight advisor-approved courses numbered above 200 from among the offerings of the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures. At least four of these eight courses must be advanced seminars numbered above 300. At least one of these eight courses must deal with Japanese linguistics. For students focusing on modern literature, at least two of these eight courses must deal with premodern material. For students focusing on premodern literature, at least two of the eight courses must deal with modern material.

Complete two upper-division or graduate-level courses in two supporting fields for a total of four courses outside of Japanese literature or linguistics. Supporting fields, to be determined in consultation with the student’s primary advisor, may include Japanese anthropology, art, art history, history, philosophy, political science, religious studies, Chinese literature, Korean literature, comparative literature, etc.

The comprehensive examination is a two-hour oral exam on Japanese literature with three examiners. The reading list (maximum 150 titles) must be approved by them at least one quarter in advance. The list must include primary texts in Japanese literature as well as core texts in methodology; students may also add a subfield and a fourth examiner if deemed necessary by their primary advisor for their research and credentialing. To pass the exam, students must demonstrate competency in literary history and critical issues for the field of Japanese literary studies, selected methodologies, and key issues in any subfield. The comprehensive exam must be completed by the end of the fourth year.

Students are expected to submit a dissertation prospectus and pass a dissertation prospectus defense (oral exam) before advancing to Terminal Graduate Registration (TGR) status by the end of spring quarter of the fourth year of study. Complete five upper-division or graduate-level courses in linguistics and other supporting fields. To be determined in consultation with the student’s primary advisor, these may include applied linguistics, Chinese linguistics, psychology, education, anthropology, or sociology.

Submit two qualifying papers (QPs) that present the student’s original research in two different subfields of linguistics discussing Japanese linguistic topics and data of acceptable quality for presentation at a professional conference and/or publishing in a linguistics journal. Each QP must be about 25-30 pages, may be an extension of a term paper, and are to be evaluated by a faculty committee, with topics and committee members decided with approval by the primary faculty advisor. The first qualifying paper (QP1) should be submitted as a draft to the committee in winter quarter of the second year, with the final draft to be submitted by week 5 of spring quarter of the second year. The second qualifying paper (QP2) should be submitted to the committee as a draft by the end of spring quarter of the third year, with the final draft to be submitted by the beginning of the fourth year.

Students are expected to submit a dissertation prospectus and pass a dissertation prospectus defense (oral exam) before advancing to Terminal Graduate Registration (TGR) status by the end of spring quarter of the fourth year of study. The purpose of the comprehensive qualifying examination in Chinese Archaeology is to test and ascertain that the student has full command of the relevant literature pertaining to the chosen field of study. The process includes the following five components: Bibliographies, Literature Review, Setting the Examination Questions, the Written Examinations, and the Oral Component Meeting of the Written Examinations.
