Program Overview
Graduate Degrees outlines the university’s requirements for PhD Minor degrees.
To request the PhD Minor in Political Science, submit the university Application for PhD Minor form to the Political Science Student Services office for review. Once approved, the Political Science department adds the PhD minor to the student’s academic career.

Degree Requirements
Completion of at least two graduate seminars (10 units) in each of two fields. These 20 units must be taken in graduate seminars (300 or 400 level) taught by Political Science faculty. Cross-listed classes taught by non-Political Science department faculty, workshops, and directed readings do not count towards this requirement except with prior approval from the Director of Graduate Studies. The Political Science fields that students may choose from are International Relations, Comparative Politics, American Politics, Political Theory, and Political Methodology. Not more than ten units of the 20-unit requirement may be taken in a single field.

Other Program Requirements
A grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 (B) must be maintained for all classes taken to fulfill PhD minor requirements. All courses must be taken for a letter grade. Due to the disruption caused by COVID-19, graduate courses taken from Spring 2020 through Summer 2021 for a CR (credit) grade may satisfy PhD pre-candidacy requirements.
No thesis or comprehensive examinations are required.
The Political Science department does not require a Political Science faculty member to serve on the students reading or oral examination committee.
