Program Overview
The minor in Portuguese is for students who want to combine acquisition of linguistic competence with studying the literatures and cultures of the Lusophone world.
Declaring the Minor
Students declare a minor in Spanish or a minor in Portuguese through Axess. Students should meet with the Director of Undergraduate Studies to discuss appropriate courses and options within the minor programs and to plan the course of study. The minors are administered through the undergraduate student services office in Pigott Hall, Room 128.

Degree Requirements
Each minor requires six courses at three or more units, totaling at least 23 units. Each course must be taken for a letter grade.
At least two courses must be taken in the ILAC department (or with ILAC faculty abroad).
Up to 12 units of second-year Portuguese (for Portuguese minor) may count towards the degree, not including conversational, oral communication, business, or medical language courses.
With the approval of the Director of Undergraduate Studies, Independent Study courses may count towards the degree.
Up to 10 units of pre-approved BOSP coursework
One approved 3-5 unit course (5 units maximum) from outside ILAC or the Language Center.
Two 100- or 200-level courses in literature or culture with a Lusophone component
Any additional 100- or 200-level courses in literature and culture to complete the required 23 units and six courses
Pre-Approved Courses for 2024-5 to fulfill 1 and 2 above include ILAC161, and ILAC 136.
