Program Overview
M-TRAM is a professional degree program that trains students to advance promising biomedical solutions from early-stage research to full regulatory approval. Technology focus areas include immunotherapy, gene therapy, vaccines, biomarkers, single-cell omics, and medical devices. M-TRAM combines flexible classroom learning with hands-on, team-based medical research, one-on-one mentoring by renowned Stanford faculty and investigators, and on-site biotechnology training.
M-TRAM offers three integrated tracks representing different aspects of translational medicine. While students choose primary focus, they gain foundational knowledge in all three areas:
Early Translation: Basic Science to Preclinical
Clinical Translation: Clinical Investigation
Late Translation: Medical Adoption and Commercialization

Stanford’s one-year M-TRAM program offers a rigorous, interdisciplinary curriculum designed to equip future leaders at the intersection of science, academic medicine, and industry. Through hands-on training in drug development, clinical trials, biotechnology law, and business strategy, students gain the skills to translate biomedical discoveries into real-world solutions. M-TRAM faculty span Medicine, Pediatrics, Radiology, Engineering, and other Stanford departments, offering mentorship across the full translational spectrum—from bench to bedside.
The curriculum is comprised of:
49 units of core science, technology, and business courses spanning four consecutive quarters
Flexibly structured coursework, which allows students who are employed to work part-time during the programʼs duration
Clinical and research rotations with a biotechnology company and a research laboratory
A summer industry internship designed to gain hands-on drug development experience
A faculty-mentored capstone research project in industry or academia

TRAM299M MTRAM CAPSTONE Project is a variable-unit, repeatable course. TRAM299M consists of TEAM (translation, entrepreneurship, and academic medicine research) and/or TRIP (translational research or individual project) or industry internship. It should be taken for a total of 20 units (2 units in Fall, 4 units in Winter and in Spring, and 10 units in Summer).
