Subinternship in Inpatient Psychiatry
Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
MED - School of Medicine
Course Description
VISITING: Closed to visitors. TYPE OF CLERKSHIP: Selective 2. DESCRIPTION: The Inpatient Psychiatry Subinternship at the VA Palo Alto provides a focused, hands-on experience that mirrors the responsibilities of a first-month psychiatry intern. Set within modern facilities that feature welcoming communal areas, outdoor patios with a basketball court, and a garden, the atmosphere promotes both healing and camaraderie. Subinterns care for a diverse group of Veterans spanning various ages, backgrounds, and psychiatric conditions¿including unique exposure to PTSD cases¿while managing 3¿6 patients at a time. Students benefit from Stanford¿s commitment to innovation through structured collaborations with the VA¿s National Center for PTSD Tech into Care initiative, VA Immersive of the Office of Healthcare Innovation and Learning, and the use of VR/XR technologies. These tools, along with custom note templates incorporating standardized mental status exams and clinical reasoning pathways, help optimize patient outcomes and encourage narratives of hope and optimism. The subinternship also emphasizes core therapeutic modalities¿behavioral activation, CBT, DBT, motivational interviewing, and supportive therapy¿balanced with management of complex medical-psychiatry cases and exposure to forensic and hearing processes. Throughout the four-week rotation, subinterns advance from ¿interpreter¿ to ¿manager¿ within the RIME model, gradually assuming leadership roles and collaborating closely with attending psychiatrists. Compassionate, empathetic care is central to the program¿s philosophy, enhanced by group activities and a supportive team environment that welcomes creativity and fresh perspectives. By the end of this subinternship, students are well-prepared in the six ACGME competencies, emerging as reflective, forward-thinking clinicians ready to guide and mentor others in effective, patient-centered psychiatric care.
