Course Description
This is a hands-on course situated at the intersection of theory and practice of experimental 16mm filmmaking. Select readings in film theory and screenings and class discussions of classic experimental films, will pave the way for a number of thematically focused filmmaking exercises. These will include: hand-processing film shot on hand-cranked 16mm cameras; editing with traditional editing tools like the Moviola and flatbed; painting, drawing, etching and otherwise physically altering the film strip. Combining tactile creative expression with aesthetic/interpretive inquiry, the class has no prerequisites and is open to all students.
