Dental Medicine and Surgery Clerkship
Course Description
VISITING: Open to visitors. TYPE OF CLERKSHIP: Elective. DESCRIPTION: Stanford Plastic Surgery's Dental Section offers a comprehensive two-week clerkship designed for 3rd and 4th-year medical and dental students, as well as medical residents from all specialties, who are interested in gaining in-depth knowledge in hospital dentistry, dental oncology, oral pathology, orofacial pain, and oral surgery. This rotation provides broad exposure to various clinical aspects of dental medicine and surgery, ranging from managing dentoalveolar trauma to preparing patients for cancer treatments, organ transplants, or cardiac device placements by clearing oral infections. Participants will gain experience across a range of practice settings, including the operating room, emergency department, inpatient hospital consults, and the Menlo Outpatient Clinic. The two-week rotation takes place at Stanford Hospital, Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, and the Dental Medicine and Surgery/Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery outpatient clinic. Students will engage in direct patient care as part of multidisciplinary clinical teams and will have the opportunity to collaborate with faculty members from various sites. An individualized schedule will be provided before the start of the clerkship to optimize learning experiences based on each student's interests and goals. PREREQUISITES: Dental or medical school student in 3rd or 4th year; any year of medical Residency. PERIODS AVAILABLE: 1-12, full-time for 2 weeks only, 2 students per period.
