Planetary Geophysics: Theory, Observational Techniques and Data Analysis
Course Description
This course will teach you how we observe planets from space. The course will consist of two parts: 1. Basics of Geophysics and Planetary Modeling; 2. Planetary Observations & Data Analysis. We will cover different types of remote sensing such as gravity, magnetic, optical, thermal, radar and LIDAR remote sensing. The class will be structured around exemplary planetary geophysical observations (e.g., the discovery of Europa's ocean; discovery of Io's volcanism, detection of Mercury's core). The class will have a group project to develop a set of science, instrument and mission requirements for a spacecraft-based remote sensing experiment. This group project will provide a venue for engineering students to work together with the science students allowing them to find a common language.
