About Us
The Program in Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies provides students with the background and skills to investigate the significance of gender and sexuality in all areas of human life.
The interdisciplinary Program in Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies provides students with the knowledge and skills to investigate the significance of gender and sexuality through global perspectives. Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies examines how societies structure gender roles, relations, and identities and how these intersect with other power hierarchies, such as class, race, nationality, ethnicity, sexuality, ability, and age. The program also coordinates courses offered across the university in lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer studies. Students learn to employ critical gender and sexuality studies methodologies to analyze the assumptions about gender and sexuality that inform a study of individuals, cultures, social institutions, policy, and areas of scholarly inquiry. The program prepares majors in the humanities, social sciences, and STEM for graduate studies and far-ranging careers.
The program offers an undergraduate major, secondary major, minor, and an interdisciplinary honors program that is open to undergraduates in all majors. Additionally, the program offers a PhD minor that is open to all students currently enrolled in a doctoral program at Stanford.
Each Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies student builds an individual program of study around a self-defined thematic focus that integrates courses from multiple departments. Majors may declare Humanities and Arts, Queer and Transgender Studies, Technology, Science and Medicine, The Law and Social Sciences, as a subplan or students may design their own thematic focus. Subplans are printed on the diploma; individual thematic foci are not printed on the diploma.
The Program encourages work in the arts and supports creative honors theses.
Curriculum guidelines and forms for the undergraduate major, minor, and honors programs are available on the program website. See the program website for additional contact information.
The Program in Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies offers the option of a Ph.D. minor to graduate students already enrolled in a Ph.D. program at Stanford University. The Ph.D. minor in Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies provides graduate students pursuing Ph.D.s broad interdisciplinary knowledge in the field and prepares them to teach courses in the subject. The goal of the program is to bring together graduate students and faculty from different departments, programs, and schools who use feminist and queer perspectives in their research. Please see our Graduate Students page for more information.
