Overseas Studies

About Us

Every Stanford undergraduate should seriously consider studying away. Regardless of the academic path you choose, you will be enriched by your journey in one of our study away programs. Your time with BOSP will equip you with transformative educational experiences that inspire you to embrace new challenges in complex global settings. These meaningful global experiences will help you develop crucial skills that are in high demand in an increasingly competitive and complex workforce — preparing you for life beyond Stanford. Nearly half of each graduating class studies away through BOSP during their undergraduate career at Stanford.

BOSP offers quarter-length programs as well as short-term, faculty-led global seminars. The quarter-length programs consist of Stanford-In Programs, operated by BOSP staff, and Academic Partnerships Programs which are run in collaboration with carefully selected academic institutions. All courses taught in BOSP programs offer direct Stanford credit that frequently counts towards degree requirements in one or more majors or fulfills general university breadth requirements.

Courses offered by the Overseas Studies Program are listed on the ExploreCourses web site under subject codes beginning with OSP or SINY.  Each BOSP location has its own subject code. Those subject codes, by location, are:

Global Seminars

Global Seminar courses and locations vary each year. See the BOSP website for more details.

Students may enroll for one or more quarters at most programs. Academic or paid internships, as well as research and community engagement opportunities are also available in various formats at many of our program locations. Some programs have minimum academic and language prerequisites, to ensure proper preparation for our rigorous academic programming. See the BOSP website for information on these prerequisites.

Because BOSP programs are considered an integral part of a Stanford education, the university tuition and fees associated with a quarter studying away from campus are about the same as those associated with a quarter spent on campus. Since BOSP students remain registered at Stanford, financial aid continues uninterrupted. BOSP Global Seminars, already highly subsidized by Stanford, also offer need-based financial assistance to help defray program fees and travel costs.

Located on the ground floor of Sweet Hall, BOSP has full-time staff members and student ambassadors to assist in advising and planning for study away. Course and program information, while accurate at the time of publication, is subject to change. Consult the BOSP website for updated information.
