Since undergraduates with varying backgrounds may be interested in obtaining a civil engineering minor, and the field itself is so broad, no single set of course requirements will be appropriate for all students. Instead, interested students are encouraged to propose courses within the guidelines below.

General guidelines are:

A civil engineering minor must contain at least 24 units of coursework not taken for the major and consist of at least six classes of at least three units each of letter-graded work, except where letter grades are not offered. Note: Cumulative GPA for all minor courses must be at least 2.0.
The list of courses must represent a coherent body of knowledge in a focused area and should include classes that build upon one another.
To declare a minor with the CEE department, students must complete a Civil or Environmental Systems Engineering Minor Program form. Professor Greg Deierlein (ggd@stanford.edu) is the advisor for minors in Civil Engineering. Catherine Gorle (gorle@stanford.edu) is the advisor for minors in the CE Sustainable Architecture and Engineering track. Students must consult with the appropriate advisor in developing their minor program, obtain the advisor’s approval (including signature) of their study list on the CE Minor Program Sheet, and email to the CEE Assistant Director of Degree Progress, Jill Filice.
Preferably two quarters prior to graduation (and at latest by the Final Study List deadline of graduation quarter), the student must complete a Major-Minor & Multiple-Major Course Approval eForm, available on Axess under the Student tab. Once submitted, the form will be reviewed by the School of Engineering, your major department, and the Registrar; you will be notified of any issues and/or approval.
Minors must be officially declared and all courses completed (or in progress) no later than the deadline for a student’s application to graduate.
