The Graduate School of Education admits a limited number of students from undergraduate departments within the university into a coterminal master’s program.

Students in a coterminal program receive a bachelor’s degree in their undergraduate major and a master’s degree in Education. Approval of the student’s undergraduate department and admission to the Graduate School of Education’s master’s program are required. Undergraduates may apply after completing at least 120 units toward graduation (UTG). The number of units required for the MA degree depends on the program requirements; see the Master’s Handbook for additional information.

The individually designed master's in education is intended for current doctoral students at Stanford who would like to earn a Master of Arts in education while studying for their PhD outside of Stanford GSE. The program is based on an individual program of study developed in consultation with the student's Stanford GSE advisor and must be finished in 3 years. The program consists of 45 units for the degree, at least 27 of which must be taken within Stanford GSE (students register in the Stanford GSE course number).

After consulting with the GSE Admissions team, current Stanford doctoral students who are admitted to the Master of Arts program at the GSE should submit a Graduate Authorization Petition to formally add the program.
