Program Overview
The Department of Mathematics offers programs leading to the degrees of Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematics and also participates in the MS and PhD degree programs offered through the Institute for Computational & Mathematical Engineering.

The master’s degree is available only to current Mathematics PhD students or as part of a coterminal program for current Stanford undergraduate students.
University Coterminal Requirements
Coterminal master’s degree candidates are expected to complete all master’s degree requirements as described in this Bulletin. Coterminal Master’s Program describes university requirements for the coterminal master’s degree. Graduate Degrees describes university requirements for the master’s degree.
The university requires that the graduate advisor be assigned in the student’s first graduate quarter even though the undergraduate career may still be open. The university also requires that the Master’s Degree Program Proposal be completed by the student and approved by the department by the end of the student’s first graduate quarter.
Specific Departmental Requirements
Candidates must complete an approved course program of 45 units of courses beyond the department requirements for the BS degree
of which at least 36 units must be Mathematics Department courses, taken for a letter grade.
The Mathematics Department courses must be numbered 120 and above, and at least 18 units must be numbered between 200 and 297.
Units from Math 360 do not count toward this degree.
The candidate must have a grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 (B) in all coursework taken in Mathematics and a GPA of 3.0 (B) in the 200-level courses considered separately.
All coursework for the MS degree must be approved before the first quarter of enrollment in the program by the Director of Graduate Studies.
